4th Annual RJ@MSU Symposium “Restorative Justice: Preventing and Repairing Harm”

“Harmed people harm; healed people heal…. If we are to have peace in our communities, we need to have a justice that heals.” – Cassidy Friedman, Restorative Justice in a Nutshell

Date: June 25, 2015

Location: MSU Union – Lake Ontario Room

Time: 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Topic: This year, our focus will be on preventing sexual violence. More directly, we will focus on ways in which restorative practices can help us to address the following key questions:

  • How can we prevent and more effectively respond to sexual violence?

  • How can we create opportunities for healing?

  • How can we more effectively hold offenders accountable?

To this end, we invite members of the higher education, law enforcement and social services communities to explore some promising research and evidence-based practices, and to dialogue on ways to move us toward a violence free community.

Featured Speakers:

Robin J. Wilson, Ph.D. and Andrew McWhinnie, M.A. are internationally acclaimed for their work in sexual violence prevention through community engagement. As clinicians, consultants, and trainers they have assisted many communities in developing Circles of Support & Accountability (CoSA) projects, in which professionally trained and supported volunteers engage with high-risk, high-need sexual offenders to assist them in making a safe and offense-free transition to the community after incarceration. Together, they bring to bear more than 50 years of knowledge and expertise to the discussion of how we maintain public safety regarding sexual violence. Having worked in hospital, correctional, and community settings, Robin and Andrew are uniquely positioned to address concerns with respect to the needs of both victims and perpetrators. In this interactive workshop, they will discuss the role of volunteers in sexual violence prevention, as well as issues associated with CoSA project development, implementation, and efficacy.

Cost is $15 for students, $25 for all others. Registration will include lunch, parking (for non MSU registrants), and a copy of a book from The Little Book series.
